Edmonton, AB - Sandro DeAngelis capped a near-perfect day by drilling a 33-yard field goal as time expired, lifting the Calgary Stampeders over the Edmonton Eskimos, 34-32, at Commonwealth Stadium.
DeAngelis finished the day 4-for-5 on field goal attempts, 3-for-3 on extra points and also converted a single for Calgary (3-3-0), which moved into third place in the West Division.
Quarterback Henry Burris was 26-of-35 passing for 323 yards and two touchdowns. He also carried the ball five times for 69 yards to bolster the CFL's top rushing attack.
The Stampeders, who came in averaging 126 yards per game on the ground, also got a solid game from Joffrey Reynolds, who carried nine times for 73 yards and one score, while Brett Ralph led the receivers with seven catches for 68 yards and one TD.
Edmonton (2-3-1) signal caller Ricky Ray completed 24-of-34 attempts for 271 yards and three touchdowns. Kamau Peterson caught six passes for 92 yards and two scores for an Eskimos' team fresh off a demoralizing 54-14 loss to Saskatchewan last week.
Calgary held a 24-20 lead at the end of the third, and just 1:07 into the fourth scored again when Reynolds scampered 46 yards into the endzone to make it 31-22.
Edmonton answered with Peterson's diving catch of a 24-yard pass from Ray with 8:43 to play, making it 31-29.
The Eskimos then grabbed a 32-31 lead with 1:38 remaining after a roughing the kicker penalty against Calgary on Sean Fleming's field goal attempt. The ball was moved back to the 13 yard line, and after Edmonton failed to get to the end zone, Fleming booted a nine-yard attempt to put his team in front.
Calgary, however, quickly moved back down the field to set up the game-winning 33-yard attempt by DeAngelis, who put the ball through the middle of the uprights, then bolted down the field in celebration and belly-flopped through the end zone.
The first half was decidedly less dramatic.
Fleming converted a single, and Calgary answered with a 21-yarder from DeAngelis in the first to take a 3-1 lead.
Things picked up in the second, however, as Ralph hauled in a 10-yard TD pass to give Calgary a 10-1 lead.
Edmonton cut it to 10-5 on an 18-yard Fleming field goal and a single on the kickoff. Fleming then made it 10-8 with a little more than five minutes remaining as he kicked a 35-yarder at 5:27.
Things turned ugly on the very next play when a fight broke out and led to the ejections of Edmonton linebackers A.J Gass and Kenny Onatolu. Gass was the more aggressive of the two, as he grabbed a Calgary helmet and tossed it down the field.
After things calmed down, Calgary took a 17-8 lead with two minutes left in the half when Jeremaine Copeland hauled in a four-yard pass from Burris, but Edmonton went back on top with 28 ticks on the clock when Ray connected with running back Tyler Ebell on a five-yard score to make it 17-15.
The Stampeders got a 38-yard field goal from DeAngelis in the third, but a 27- yard TD pass from Ray to Peterson put Edmonton ahead 22-20.
The Stampeders got a point back on a single, and DeAngelis added a 42 yarder at the end of the third to put Calgary on top, 24-22.
