Winnipeg, MB - Winnipeg Blue Bombers slotback Milt Stegall set the Canadian Football League all-time record for touchdowns and now has 139, breaking the mark of 137 in Friday's game against Hamilton.
Stegall, a 13-year veteran, set the record with 6:43 remaining in the second quarter, giving the Blue Bombers a 14-6 lead. Kevin Glenn pitched the ball forward to Stegall along the right side, and Stegall darted into the end zone from a yard out for his 138th career TD.
He passed Mike Pringle and George Reed after failing to break the record in three straight games.
On the play prior to the score, Stegall caught a 20-yard pass, nearly getting into the end zone.
Ken Hildahl, chairman of the Blue Bombers, was on the field to congratulate Stegall in a ceremony as the game was stopped for a few minutes to honor the veteran, who also played in the NFL for parts of three seasons (1992-94) with the Cincinnati Bengals.
'I want to thank Charlie Taaffe (Hamilton head coach) and the TiCats for allowing me to do this little time session,' said Stegall, who also thanked his family and the fans for the honor.
Stegall caught a 35-yard touchdown pass from Glenn with under two minutes left in the fourth quarter, as the Blue Bombers finished off a 36-18 victory.
Stegall tied the mark in Week 1, late in the fourth quarter against Edmonton, forcing overtime, a game that ended in a 39-39 tie.
