Eskimos edge Roughriders on late Fleming field goal

Jul 21, 2007, 4:30 GMT

Edmonton, AB - Sean Fleming's 47-yard field goal with just over two minutes remaining boosted the Edmonton Eskimos to a 21-20 win over Saskatchewan.

Ricky Ray completed 31-of-44 passes for 349 yards and a touchdown for the Eskimos (2-1-1), who scored the game's final 20 points and now have a nine- game regular season home winning streak against Saskatchewan. The Roughriders haven't won a regular season game at Commonwealth Stadium since October 28, 2000 when they scored a 54-52 victory in overtime.

Kamau Peterson had seven receptions for 54 yards and Jason Tucker caught five balls for 91 yards and a score for the Eskimos, who have won two straight.

Kerry Joseph connected on 16-of-32 passes for 200 yards and a TD for the Roughriders (2-2), who have lost two in a row. Wes Cates gained 82 yards on the ground and Jason Armstead returned a punt 90 yards for a touchdown in a losing cause.

After Fleming's kick, the Roughriders tried driving for the go-ahead score, but Joseph had the ball knocked down by defensive end Stevie Baggs, giving the ball back to Edmonton.

However, Ray immediately fumbled the ball away on a scramble, but Saskatchewan couldn't move the ball into field goal territory. Joseph completed a 16-yard pass to Corey Grant.

Joseph was later sacked by Adam Braidwood, and a completed pass to Andrew Fantuz was short of a first down, and the Eskimos got the ball back with 28 seconds left and ran out the clock.

Saskatchewan's Luca Congi booted a 36-yard field goal midway through the opening quarter, and the Roughriders dominated the second. Congi kicked a 16- yard field goal, Joseph hit D.J. Flick with a 19-yard TD pass, and Armstead ran a punt back to the end zone.

Fleming's 51-yard single was the only point of the half for the Eskimos, who then rallied. Stefan LeFors hit Rob Brown with a five-yard TD pass and an 11- yard connection from Ray to Tucker made it 20-15 with under 10 minutes left in the third. Fleming's 29-yard field goal later in the period made it a two- point deficit.
