Montreal, QC - Wally Buono, who led the British Columbia Lions to the Grey Cup title, has been selected as the Canadian Football League's coach of the year for the 2006 season.
Buono guided the Lions to their third straight West Division title last season with a league-best 13-5 record. The club then went on to capture its fifth Grey Cup championship with a 25-14 victory over the Montreal Alouettes.
The award was the third for Buono, who previously earned the honor in 1992 and '93 as coach of the Calgary Stampeders. He is tied with Jack Gotta for the second-most top coach honors, behind only Don Matthews' five.
Buono, who trails only Matthews for the most career coaching victories, received 34 of the 46 first-place votes from the Football Reporters of Canada.
Doug Berry of Winnipeg earned eight first-place votes to finish second, while Toronto's Michael Clemons was third in the balloting for the second straight year.
