Popp becomes Montreal's full-time head coach
Dec 2, 2006, 1:15 GMT
Montreal, QC - The Montreal Alouettes announced Friday that Jim Popp will take over as the head coach on a full-time basis.
Popp took over as interim coach after Don Matthews resigned October 4 due to health-related issues. Popp then led Montreal to the Eastern Division title and to the Grey Cup before losing to British Columbia.
The Alouettes' vice president and general manager for the last 11 seasons, the 41-year-old Popp will also continue to guide the club's football operations department.
'Jim Popp is the architect of our football team,' Alouettes president and CEO Larry Smith said. 'This will be a great opportunity for him to put his stamp on the entire product. We know he's a winner, we know he excels in his role and believe he is the best person to bring us closer to our ultimate objective of winning the Grey Cup.'
