Oct 21, 2006, 3:05 GMT
Toronto, ON - Andrew Fantuz scored the lone touchdown for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, who held on to beat the Toronto Argonauts, 13-9, at Rogers Centre.
Fantuz finished with just two catches for 33 yards, but his TD reception proved to be the difference in this low-scoring affair.
Kerry Joseph threw for 120 yards on 12-of-28 passing with one interception and Kenton Keith rushed for 70 yards on 17 carries for the Roughriders, who defeated Toronto for just the second time in their last six contests.
Damon Allen completed 17-of-35 passes for 127 yards and Tony Miles caught five passes for 44 yards for the Argonauts, who failed to clinch a home playoff game.
Luca Congi got Saskatchewan on the scoreboard first courtesy of a 30-yard field goal that capped a 10-play, 51-yard drive with 28 seconds left in the first quarter. Joseph hit Keith for 26 yards and connected with Fantuz for a 21-yard gain during the possession.
The Roughriders took a 10-0 lead on Fantuz's 12-yard touchdown catch with 8:22 remaining in the second. Dominique Dorsey's 44-yard punt return one play earlier set up the score.
Less than a minute before halftime, Saskatchewan added three points to their lead on another 30-yard boot by Congi.
Toronto finally put some points on the board 1:06 into the third quarter. Arland Bruce's 43-yard kickoff return setup a 47-yard field goal by Noel Prefontaine to cut the deficit to 13-3.
The Argonauts notched a safety less than two minutes later when Congi conceded in the end zone, but on its ensuing possession, Toronto was denied of any points after Prefontaine's 17-yard field goal attempt hit the left upright.
Prefontaine, though, made right on his prior miss on the Argos' next possession with a 37-yard boot with 6:42 to go in the third.
A 36-yard single by Prefontaine was the only scoring Toronto could manage in the fourth.
Game Notes
Toronto linebacker Michael O'Shea became the third player in CFL history to record 1,000 tackles and the first Canadian to accomplish the feat.
The Argos had a four-game winning streak snapped and lost for the just the second time in their last 10 games.
