Aug 26, 2006, 3:55 GMT
Winnipeg, MB - Damon Allen's touchdown pass in the final minutes of the game helped the Toronto Argonauts to an 18-15 victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
Allen finished 21-for-31 with 277 yards and two touchdowns for the Argonauts, who have won their last three games. Allen now needs just 145 yards to pass Warren Moon, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame who began his pro career in Canada, and become the top passing quarterback in football history. Moon currently holds that distinction with 70,553 yards.
Arland Bruce hauled in four passes for 58 yards and a touchdown and R.J. Soward had three catches for 90 yards and a touchdown for Toronto.
Mike Quinn went 13-for-26 with 92 yards, two touchdowns and an interception and Charles Roberts carried the ball 21 times for 120 yards for the Blue Bombers, who have dropped their last three games.
The Argonauts were trailing 15-3 heading into the final 15 minutes, but grabbed the lead with two touchdowns.
After getting the ball back on a punt, on the first play of the drive Allen hooked up with Soward on a 73-yard touchdown pass to cut the score to 15-10 a little less than three minutes into the fourth quarter.
With time winding down, Toronto took its first lead of the game. Allen hit Bruce for a seven-yard touchdown pass. The play was initially called an incomplete pass, but the referee's booth challenged the call and it was ruled a touchdown. Allen hit Tony Miles with a pass to complete a two-point conversion and make it 18-15 with 2:23 to play.
Orlondo Steinauer picked off a Quinn pass with 1:31 left to seal the victory for Toronto.
The Blue Bombers took a 7-0 lead on their second possession of the game when Quinn hooked up with Chris Brazzell for a two-yard touchdown pass with 7:23 left in the first quarter.
The Argonauts had an opportunity to put some points on the board in the second quarter, but Noel Prefontaine missed a 52-yard field goal.
Winnipeg took advantage of the miscue and marched the ball down the field and capped it off with a five-yard touchdown pass from Quinn to Kwame Cavil to assume a 14-0 lead with 5:29 left in the first half.
The Blue Bombers added a single towards the end of the first half to take a 15-0 lead into the locker room.
Toronto got on the board when Prefontaine connected on a 30-yard field goal 3:42 into the third quarter to make it a 15-3 contest.
Game Notes
The Blue Bombers played without quarterback Kevin Glenn and slotback Milt Stegall. Glenn recently underwent surgery and Stegall has missed three games due to a rib injury.
Brazzell finished with three catches for 14 yards and Cavil had three receptions for 13 yards.
Toronto running back John Avery had 14 carries for 90 yards.
