Roughriders release GM Shivers
Aug 21, 2006, 21:05 GMT
Regina, Saskatchewan - The Saskatchewan Roughriders announced on Monday that general manager Roy Shivers has been released from his duties.
'We would like to thank Roy for his contribution to this team over the last seven years,' Roughriders president Jim Hopson said. 'His contributions to the organization and to the Saskatchewan community cannot be understated, but we were faced with the decision to start planning for the future.'
Shivers joined the Roughriders on December 24, 1999, making him the 13th Roughrider general manager. In seven seasons with the club, Saskatchewan posted a record of 52-64-1 and his seven seasons trail only Ken Preston (21 years) and Al Ford (11 years) for the longest GM tenures with the team.
With four Grey Cup rings to his credit, Shivers has also worked with the Calgary Stampeders, Birmingham Barracudas and B.C. Lions during his career.

I agree , this doesn't make any sense. They win a big one and they release Shivers? I haven't much liked what I have seen with the Riders this year but , they have a ton of talent & when they gel , watch out!!!! This should not have happened so early in the season. Shivers and Barrett should have had the rest of 2006 to get this team on it's feet. I would not blame Barrett if he chose to follow Shivers voluntarily. After all , Shivers suppoted Danny during all of his challenges & even refused to fire him. The Riders needed a wake-up call but I am not sure this was the way to go.
All Shivers did was attempt to intimidate everyone in the province, on the board, and on the staff and the team. Well guess what Roy...you ran into the wrong mean SOB when you tried to sway the board to gas Hopson and the new structure and to keep you as the big smoke of the organizational chart. Looks good on ya. Your gangsta' intimidation is never gonna' work with a good old boy like Hopson. You tried to take on your President and you got pancaked flat on your back. Buh bye Roy...Buh bye.

Makes no sense at all. Looks like a power struggle between Shivers and Hopson. If I was on the coaching staff of the Riders, I would hand in my resignation. Roy has stood behind those guys through thick and thin. Time for them to return the favor. At the very least, Danny Barrett has to resign. He can't stay under these circumstances.
