Burris leads Calgary past Saskatchewan

Aug 6, 2006, 2:35 GMT

Calgary, AB - Henry Burris threw two touchdowns to lead the Calgary Stampeders to a 23-7 victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Burris went 21-for-33 with 255 yards and two interceptions and Nikolas Lewis and David Allen added touchdown receptions for the Stampeders (4-4), who stopped a three-game losing streak to improve to .500 on the season.

Joffrey Reynolds had 18 carries for 93 yards with a touchdown for Calgary, which is 2-1 versus Saskatchewan this season.

Kerry Joseph was 22-for-39 with 233 yards and an interception and Kenton Keith carried the ball 10 times for 88 yards for the Roughriders (3-4), who have lost two of their last three games.

The Stampeders grabbed the lead early in the game when Burris hooked up with Allen on a five-yard touchdown reception to make it 7-0 just 3:06 into the contest.

The Roughriders cut into the deficit when Luca Congi hit a 32-yard field goal a little over six minutes into the first to cut the score to 7-3.

Calgary got a single early in the second and Burris hit Lewis for a 14-yard touchdown reception to complete an eight-play, 62-yard drive with 6:33 left in the first half to give Calgary a 15-3 lead.

The Stampeders added another single a few minutes later, but Saskatchewan chipped into the lead when Congi hit a 32-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to cut the score to 16-6.

Neither team got on the scoreboard in the third quarter and the Roughriders added a single a little less than seven minutes into the final stanza.

Calgary, though, sealed the game when Reynolds ran the ball into the end zone from six yards out with 6:38 to play. The touchdown was setup thanks to a 54-yard pass interference call on Tristan Clovis.
