Joseph leads Roughriders past Stampeders
Jul 30, 2006, 2:50 GMT
Regina, SK - Kerry Joseph tossed a pair of touchdown passes to lead Saskatchewan to a 19-9 win over Calgary at Mosaic Stadium.
Joseph finished 23-of-38 for 270 yards with two interceptions. Matt Dominguez hauled in eight balls for 94 yards and a score while Jason Armstead caught six passes for 97 yards and scored the other touchdown for the Roughriders (3-3), who snapped a two-game losing skid to Calgary.
Henry Burris threw for 188 yards, and completed just 15-of-31 passes. Joffrey Reynolds ran for 102 yards on 13 carries for the Stampeders (3-4), who failed to find the end zone. They have now dropped their last two games.
The Roughriders took a 17-9 lead into the fourth quarter, and saw it extended to 19-9 after Calgary conceded a safety with 6;26 to play. The Stampeders blocked a punt with just under four minutes left to give them good field position, but kicker Sandro DeAngelis failed to connect on a 50-yard field goal that would have made it a one-possession game.
A 43-yard field goal DeAngelis accounted for the scoring in the first quarter. However, the Roughriders offense woke up in the second quarter. Joseph threw both of his touchdown passes in the second to give Saskatchewan a 14-3 lead.
With 11:18 to go in the second quarter, Joseph found Dominguez in the end zone from 11 yards out to put the Roughriders up 7-3. Three minutes later, Joseph threw his second scoring pass of the game when he lofted a 36-yard strike to Armstead, giving his team an 11-point cushion. DeAngelis pulled Calgary to within eight points, 14-6, with a 40-yard field goal before the half.
The two teams traded field goals in the third, allowing the Roughriders to take an eight-point lead into the final quarter.
Game Notes
The Roughriders turned the ball over three times, while Calgary coughed it up twice.
Saskatchewan outgained the Stampeders 362-274.
The two teams have split the season series so far this year. They will meet again next week.
