Stegall's 100-yard TD reception caps wild win for Winnipeg
Jul 21, 2006, 6:05 GMT
Edmonton, AB - Kevin Glenn tossed a 100-yard touchdown pass to Milt Stegall on the final play of the game for a miraculous 25-22 Winnipeg win over Edmonton at Commonwealth Stadium.
After a costly turnover by Glenn in the final minute gave Edmonton the lead, the Blue Bombers quarterback redeemed himself. He found a streaking Stegall, who caught the pass on the left side of the field and split two defenders, Malcolm Frank and Keyuo Craver, and then galloped the final 65 yards untouched for the game-winning score.
Winnipeg (4-2) had a 3rd-and-1 with less than one minute to play in the game. Glenn plunged through the line, picking up the first down, but lost the ball on the way down. Jonte Buhl recovered the ball for Edmonton (2-3), setting up the go-ahead touchdown, a nine-yard pass from Ricky Ray to Jason Tucker with 15 seconds to play.
After the ensuing kickoff, the Glenn threw incomplete, but then hit Stegall for the incredible finish. Stegall now trails George Reed and Mike Pringle by only four touchdowns for the all-time lead. Stegall has 133 while Reed and Pringle have 137.
Glenn finished 20-of-35 for 374 yards and a touchdown, while Stegall hauled in 10 passes for 254 yards for the Blue Bombers.
Ray connected on 26-of-38 passes, good for 342 yards and two scores for the Eskimos. Tucker caught five balls for 92 yards and both touchdowns.
In a first half dominated by defense, Troy Westwood connected on two field goals and a single for Winnipeg, while Edmonton's kicker, Sean Fleming, hit one field goal and single, giving the Blue Bombers a 7-4 lead at halftime.
Winnipeg found the end zone 2:30 into the second half when Glenn punched the ball in from a yard out to give the Bombers a 14-4 advantage that grew to 15-4 after a Westwood single.
Ray lofted a 32-yard touchdown pass to Tucker with 5:44 left in the third stanza to cut the deficit to 15-11 before another Westwood single made it a 16-11 game heading into the fourth quarter.
With under seven minutes to play Ray connected on a 51-yard pass to Ed Hervey, setting up the Eskimos with a 1st-and-goal at the two. However, Edmonton failed to push it in and had to settle for a field goal, cutting the lead to 16-14.
Westwood connected on a field goal on the Bombers ensuing possession for a 19-14 lead, and Robert Bean gave the ball back to the Winnipeg offense with 1:35 to go as he made his first career CFL interception.
