Carson, CA - Vic Darchinyan retained his IBF flyweight title and sent Victor Burgos to the hospital after scoring a 12th-round technical knockout at the Home Depot Center.
Darchinyan (28-0, 22 KOs), who retained his title for a sixth time, floored Burgos (39-15-3) in the second round. Even though the champion didn't land strong punches in the final round, the accumulation of punches throughout the bout seemed to take a toll on Burgos. Referee Jon Schorle called a halt to the fight at the 1:27 mark, after Burgos' knees wobbled and he had trouble maintaining his balance.
Burgos slumped over in his corner after the fight and was conscious as he was loaded on a stretcher and taken to a hospital.
On the same card, Rafael Marquez captured the WBC bantamweight crown from Israel Vazquez, who quit after the seventh round due to a broken nose.
Marquez (37-3) busted his opponent's nose in the opening round, but was still knocked down by Vazquez (41-4) in the third. However, Vazquez explained he couldn't continue due to breathing problems.
