IAAF blood tests 1,400 athletes at worlds
Aug 27, 2011, 7:53 GMT
Daegu, South Korea - A large majority of athletes has undergone mandatory blood tests ahead of the world championships, the governing athletics body said on the opening day of competition Saturday.
The IAAF said that 1,400 out of the 1,945 entered athletes have been tested.
'It is not an exaggeration to say that the athletes have been 'eager' to provide their blood, with many Daegu entrants confirming that they wanted to send a clear message to their peers that they had nothing to hide,' the IAAF said.
The IAAF is conducting blood screening on all athletes for the first time at world championships. It also carries out 500 urine and blood tests during competition, which runs until September 4.
