Berlin - Olympic champion Primoz Kozmus claimed the first gold medal for Slovenia at world athletics championships when he dominated the hammer throw on Monday.
Kozmus was the only athlete to beat the 80-metres mark with a big throw of 80.84m in his sixth attempt to claim the gold after silver in 2007. His next best attempts of 80.15m and 79.74m would have also been good enough for the title.
The 2001 world and 2000 Olympic champion Szymon Ziolkowski of Poland took silver with 79.30m to complete his set of medals at the worlds which also include a bronze from 2005.
Season-leading pre-event favourite Kriztian Pars of Hungary had to settle for fourth with 77.45m.
The other finals set for later in the session were highlighted by the women's 100m sprint, where Jamaica were eyeing a second gold after Usain Bolt's amazing world record run of 9.58 seconds on Sunday for the men's title.
Olympic champion Shelly-Ann Fraser topped the semis with 10.79 seconds as all four Jamaicans made the final set for 1935 GMT.
Yelena Isinbayeva aimed for a third pole vault gold, fellow-Russian Olympic champion Gulnara Galkina topped the women's 3,000m steeplechase order, Kenenisa Bekele of Ethiopia hoped for a fourth 10,000m crown and Russian Tatyana Lebedeva for another triple jump title.
There was drama in the women's 800m semis when Olympic champion Pamela Jelimo of Kenya failed to finish her semi-final in what has been a terrible season for her.
Compatriot title holder Janeth Jepkosgei barely squeezed into Wednesday's final while season-leader Caster Semenya of South Africa led the semi-finals with 1:58.66 minutes.
Top favourite Lashinda Demus of the US led the way in the women's 400m hurdles heats with 54.66 seconds, with Romanian contender Angela Morosanu (54.70) and Olympic champion Melanie Walker of Jamaica (55.17) also into Tuesday's semi-finals.
