Washington - East Africans continued their domination of the Boston Marathon with victories in both the men's and women's races in Monday's 2009 edition.
But the two races were very different at the finish.
Ethiopian Deriba Merga pulled away from the men's field to finish the course at the traditional distance of 26 miles and 385 yards (42.195 kilometres) in two hours, eight minutes, 42 seconds.
Daniel Rono of Kenya was second in 2:09:32. Ryan Hall of the United States was third in 2:09:40.
Ethiopia and Kenya traded the top spots in a sprint to the finish of the women's race. Kenyan Salina Kosgei finished in 2:32:16, outlegging Ethiopia's Dire Tune by one second. Kara Goucher of the United States was third in 2:32:25.
