Rieti, Italy - Sprint star Asafa Powell on Sunday established a new 100 metre world record, when he sprinted the distance in 9.74 seconds at a meet in the Italian city of Rieti.
The 24-year-old bettered his own best by .03 seconds. He first broke the world record in June 2005 when he ran 9.77 seconds in Athens and has twice since equalled that mark.
American Justin Gatlin, who has been banned for eight years till 2014 for a doping offence, also ran 9.77 seconds in March last year in Doha.
The Jamaican Powell has not yet won any major title in his career, missing out on Olympic and world championship gold.
He finished third behind American Tyson Gay and Derrick Atkins of the Bahamas at the recent world championships in Osaka.
