Austrian steeplechaser in hospital after bad fall
Aug 26, 2007, 2:46 GMT
Osaka, Japan - Austrian Guenther Weidlinger was rushed to hospital after a horrific fall in the men's 3,000m steeplechase heats at the athletics world championships on Sunday.
The exact nature of his injuries were not immediately known and it was also unclear whether he was conscious. Television footage showed he was bleeding heavily in his face.
Weidlinger, 29, was seemingly spiked by another rider and fell heavily to the ground early in his heat just before one of the obstacles the runners have to jump over.
His fall sent three others tumbling over the steeple, but they could all continue. Weidlinger was treated on site several minutes before being taken to hospital.
Weidlinger was no medal contender, but has top-10 placings at world championships and Olympics. He was Austria's leading athlete in Osaka.
