Rome - French long jumper Salim Sdiri was rushed to hospital in an ambulance after being hit by a javelin during the Golden Gala athletics meet on Friday night.
Meet organizers said later that he was conscious all the time and that his injuries were not life-threatening. They said he likely damaged ribs, possibly his lung as well.
Sdiri was hit in the upper right side of his body when the javelin of Finnish star Tero Patkamaki sailed out of the sector and into the long jump area of the Olympic Stadium.
Italian Andrew Howe, who won the long jump, said he was walking over to Sdiri when the incident occurred.
'I pulled it out, I held the wound. There was a lot of blood. I still have blood on me.
'It could have been me, it could have hit my head. Everybody freaked out,' he said.
Both competitions were completed after the horrific incident.
