Apr 15, 2007, 15:02 GMT
Paris - Mubarak Hassan Shami of Qatar claimed first place in the Paris marathon on Sunday, clocking the second best time in event history.
The Kenya-born Shami covered the classic 42.195-kilometres distance in 2 hours 7 minutes 19 seconds for a convincing victory ahead of the 2006 champion Asfaws Gashaw Melese of Ethiopia (2:09:53) and Kenyan Daniel Rono (2:10:38).
Shami missed the track record from Kenyan Mike Rotich (2:06.33) by just 46 seconds.
The women's race saw Ethiopian Tafa Magarsa in front, adding the Paris win to that from Dubai earlier this year in 2:25:06 hours.
Russia's Gulnara Vygovskaya was a distant second in 2:28:21 and Christelle Daunay delighted the home crowd with a third-place finish for France in 2:28.52 hours.
The race saw a total 35,000 starters.
