Hamburg - Swedish heptathlon queen Carolina Kluft has been voted 2006 European Athlete of the Year in a poll conducted by the continental athletics federation EAA.
The EAA said on Monday that Kluft won the women's poll - with votes from member federations, the media and athletics fans on the EAA website - with four points. She was ranked first by fans and media and second by the federations.
Second place saw a tie between double European sprint champion Kim Gevaert of Belgium and Russian pole vault star Svetlana Isinbayeva, who beat Kluft for the 2005 honour. Both had seven points.
Kluft topped the bill as she stretched her unbeaten heptathlon run by another three events highlighted by the European championship title in her home country in Gothenburg in August. Kluft last lost an outdoor heptathlon in 2001.
The men's winner was due to be announced on Tuesday by the EAA.
