Deakes improves 50km walk world record
Dec 2, 2006, 12:46 GMT
Geelong, Australia - Nathan Deakes of Australia on Saturday lowered the 50-kilometres walk world record to 3 hours 35 minutes 47 seconds at the national championships.
Deakes, 29, took 16 seconds of the 3:36:03 hours Polish legend Robert Korzeniowski needed to win the world title on August 27, 2003, in Paris.
'It's obviously quite a surprise. I didn't think I was in that kind of shape. To break a world record is really special. To do at home is even nicer,' said Deakes.
The world record is the biggest career achievement for the 29- year-old Deakes.
He has a 20km/50km title double from the 2002 and 2006 Commonwealth Games and got bronze over 20km at the 2004 Olympics. In the 50km race in Athens, he was disqualified at the 34km mark while walking side by side with the later winner Korzeniowski.
