Debrecen, Hungary - Lornah Kiplagat set a 20-kilometre world record Sunday at the inaugural IAAF World Road Running Championships in Debrecen, Hungary.
Kenyan-born Kiplagat, who runs for the Netherlands, clocked 1 hour 3 minutes 21 seconds, to beat the previous record of 1:03.26, set by Britain's Paula Radcliffe in October, 2001, in Bristol, England.
Romania's Constantina Tomescu also broke Radcliffe's mark to finish second two seconds behind Kiplagat. Kenya's Rita Jeptoo Sitienei, who was 26 seconds behind Kiplagat, was third.
Kiplagat was second at the 2005 half-marathon world championships which has now been replaced by the 20-kilometre road race.
Tadesse Zersenay of Ethiopia meanwhile won the men's race in 56:01, ahead of the Kenyans Kipchumba Robert Kipkorir (56:41) and Kebenei Wilson Kiprotich (57:15).
