Indianapolis - US sprinter Justin Gatlin reaffirmed his dominance in the 100 metres Friday, winning the event in 9.93 seconds at the AT&T USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Gatlin, the Olympic and World champion, led from start to finish in the final, USA Track and Field (USATF) reported at its website. He posted a time of 10.02 in winning the first round and 9.99 in the semifinals. He ran the semifinal and final into a 1.2 metres-per- second headwind.
All three races at Indianapolis' Michael Carroll Stadium were run Friday after bad weather Thursday forced a delay of the meet. Tyson Gay was second in the final in 10.07 and Shawn Crawford was third in 10.26.
Gatlin shares the world record in the 100 metre event - 9.77 seconds - with Jamaican Asafa Powell. The ruling body IAAF on June 16 ratified Gatlin's time of 9.77 seconds on May 12 on Doha. His time was originally given at 9.76 seconds, but the IAAF corrected it to 9.77 seconds five days later due to a timing error.
Olympic champion Marion Jones won the women's 100 metres. It was her fifth title in the 100 metres and her first sprint crown since 2002, USATF said.
