Trekkies 2 The Official Soundtrack

What you have here is 35 tracks totalling just less than 53 minutes of what sounds like a drunken karaoke night at a Trekkies convention. It’s difficult to think of exactly who outside the people involved in this cd would buy this.

So what have we really got? The cover promises rock gods, Klingon metal warriors, filk teenagers and punk rock savants….. Well I was curious to find out just exactly what ‘filk’ was and no it’s not a sexual act.

Half of the 35 tracks comprise of sound bites from both the Trekkies movies and the rest is a mixed bag of tricks at best. No Klingons off the starboard bow thankfully. Stand out tracks (if I can say stand out in any sense of the phrase) are the title track ‘Beam Me Up’ with B52’s lead man, Fred Schneider, giving its vocals and ‘Ethan’s Aliens’ which is a funny anecdotal from Ethan Philips (Neelix from Star Trek: Voyager). You will be glad there is a lyric sheet so you can bellow along with Stovokor.

I will confess I do like Star Trek and its offshoots (some more than others) and own some too. A wry smile crept over my face once or twice while listening to this but I cannot even contemplate when a second listen would ever occur. It’s like one of those kinds of jokes where it was funny the first time around. This is a limited appeal soundtrack to a limited appeal movie so all I can say is it’s for completists only. It might have made more sense to release this as an extra disc with the DVD. A strange move then to release it on its own or perhaps just wishful thinking.

Only one star for its effort seemed harsh so an extra half is given jointly for Warp 11’s ‘Everything I Do, I Do With William Shatner’ and Ash Productions’ ‘The Expendable Guy’ for at least having their humour in the right place.
