'Team America: World Police' Score Reviewed
By Mark Sung Nov 8, 2004, 15:47 GMT
The ‘Team America: World Police’ soundtrack features the songs written by Trey Parker and Matt Stone and the score by composer Harry Gregson-Williams. How much a listener will enjoy or appreciate the soundtrack will heavily depend on whether they saw the movie and enjoyed it, or if they are fans of South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s work. The first ten of the total fifteen tracks are a collection of the songs featured in the movie. As you would expect from Parker and Stone, the song lyrics are politically incorrect with lots of bad taste humor.
The soundtrack opens with the track ‘Everyone Has AIDS’ which is taken from the musical Lease (a parody of the Broadway musical Rent). Although only just over a minute long, the track sings about how everyone has Aids and how everyone has died from Aids and for the most part contains the lyrics ‘Everyone Has AIDS’ and ‘AIDS, AIDS, AIDS’ and more ‘AIDS, AIDS, AIDS’.
The next few tracks feature the spoof patriotic country song ‘Freedom Isn't Free’, the mock rock ‘America, F**k Yeah!’ and the terrorist theme ‘Derka Derk’.
The love songs of the movie are also presented starting with the rock ballad ‘Only A Woman’ and the track ‘The End of an Act’ which manages to make fun of Michael Bay's Pearl Harbor disaster at the same time.
The soundtrack goes into a melancholy state for a while with the tracks ‘I'm So Ronery’, sung by the Kim Jong II in the film, and the slow acoustic reprise of the ‘America, F**k Yeah!’ track.
After the feel good 80’s style pop song ‘Montage’ the songs come to an end with the track ‘North Korean Melody’. With its made up Korean and mocking oriental music, it’s hard to see what’s meant to be so amusing about this track.
The remaining tracks of the soundtrack feature the score from the movie by composer Harry Gregson-Williams. The style of the score is very traditional and clichéd from its heroic themes in ‘The Team America March’ to the dramatic and romantic themes in ‘Lisa & Gary’. Even the track ‘Putting a Jihad On You’ sounds very familiar to moments from the ‘S.W.A.T.’ soundtrack. The score music sounds quite impressive at times, even if it does sound like something you’ve heard before. However the score fails to make much of a lasting impression.
For those who loved the movie and the work of Trey Parker and Matt Stone, they will find the ‘Team America: World Police’ soundtrack very entertaining with its funny and clever lyrics. For those who haven’t seen the movie, the soundtrack won’t seem to have much substance. Outside the context of the movie, the soundtrack is no more than an album of juvenile novelty songs with a little bit of score music stuck on the end.
