Soundtrack Review: ‘The Dark Knight’

Sherlock Holmes and Moriarty, Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader, Batman and the Joker, and now Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard.

I’ll not gage which is the hero and which is the villain in that last team up (in the special features of Batman Begins one of the composers said they were Robin), but the two composers successful pairing for Batman Begins is repeated again with the same success. The Dark Knight is scheduled to break box office records this summer in the same way that 1989’s Batman did. Thanks to a stellar marketing campaign and the curiosity over the next to final performance of Heath Ledger, the sold out sign is going to be appearing on showings of the Dark Knight across the nation. At first “Why so Serious?” starts off so quietly that I wondered if I remembered to hit the play button. Glad I didn’t push up the volume button as the score comes thundering through. It has both the majesty and the madness that we expect from the Joker. “Harvey Two Face” uses brass and comes across as somewhat heroic. Considering that Harvey starts off as a crime-fighting lawyer and then becomes the twisted Two Face I thought this was most appropriate. The daring duo of composers does a masterful job of both highlighting their previous score and adding new themes and tones. Their teaming makes a grand, energetic score and one that Batfans will definitely want to play over and over again. Editor's Note: Warner Bros.
