The soundtrack for Disney Channel's new movie, "Camp Rock" was released June 17, before the debut of "Camp Rock" on the Disney Channel June 20, and ABC, June 21. Using the "High School Musical" formula, the movie concerns a summer camp for teens who want to play music.
The leads, actors/ singers Demi Lovato, Meaghan Martin, Aaryn Doyle, Renee Sandstrom, Jordan Francis and the popular Jonas Brothers, do all their own singing.
The tunes feature inspirational lyrics for kids, about being true to yourself and going for your dreams; as well as relationships. The pop music has a good beat, much of it has an electronic sound to it. Since the movie is about performing music and how important it is in the characters' lives, the tunes reflect that.
Highlights include the movie's anthem, "We Rock," performed by the cast. Joe Jonas sings the ballad "Gotta Find You;" The hip-hop, techno beat "Start the Party" and "Hasta La Vista" with Francis and cast; the duet of Demi Lovato and Joe Jonas on "This is Me." Renee Sandstrom shines on "Here I Am." Martin plays Tess, the misunderstood bully, sings her tune "Too Cool" and Aaryn Doyle sings the techno "What It Takes".
On the negative side, I was bored with too many "come on, come on" in the lyrics. The girls also all kind of sound the same - probably because the music is so similar. I'd like to hear how these teens really sing. But I admit the tunes do make you want to move and dance.
I'm sure kids that enjoy the "High School Musical" flicks will like the "Camp Rock" soundtrack. It's good for kids to listen to songs that are positive and have a message. As "Play My Music" says, "Music's in my soul, I can hear it every day, Every night, it's the one thing on my mind, Music's got control, And I'm never letting go, No, No, I just wanna play my music."
If the CD is played on a computer, there's an interactive section from Disney.
