Soundtrack Review: Karl Preusser – ‘Dragonlance: Dragons of Autumn Twilight’

The soundtrack of the animated film based on some novels of the same name makes its way onto CD. I’m not familiar with the novels or this animated film so I went out and did a bit of sleuthing on the net.

The reviews were pretty abysmal and from what I could see of the animation it looked like some of the direct to video junk that appeared (and still appears today as well) in the 80s. Most reviewers did point out the talented voice cast, including Kiefer Sutherland and Lucy Lawless, and the score by Karl Preusser were worthy of praise. I don’t know about the voice work, but I’d have to agree with the praise for the score. If the film does indeed stink as it would appear, Preusser provides an epic and excellent score for what might be a sow’s ear. My ear only heard a great score that made wonderful use of choirs and made the film sound action packed. Technically, he may do us a disservice in that we will expect a much better film judging form the mighty score that he provides. I’m disappointed that the film may not live up to the wonderful music provided, but you may just want to skip the film and buy the soundtrack.
