‘Under the Same Moon’ is the story of a nine-year-old boy named Carlitos who is down Mexico way whose mother is working illegally in Los Angeles and sending the money back to him. When he loses his Mexican caretaker he begins the perilous trek to get across the border and be reunited with his mother.
It really makes no difference I suppose but I’m intrigued that an Italian composer was hired to score a film that seems so firmly rooted in Mexico.
The soundtrack sounds like a true journey and encompasses many emotions and moments of drama. I was expecting some more Mexican flavor and was surprised when a charming piano track (‘La Misma Luna’) opened the disc.
The track is really quite sweeping and wonderful, but there is some more geographical music later on. You can imagine that a nine-year-old trying to make his way across the hostile territory and into the States would have it’s moments of terror as well of elation.
The film sounds like it’s ending was clearly telegraphed and the final track on the soundtrack does make it sound like Carlitos is successful as it very much sounds like reunion music and we can interpret from this music that it’s a happy one.
