Shutter is a remake of a Thai film from 2004. Ben (Joshua Jackson) has just gotten married to Jane (Rachael Taylor). On their way to a cabin they get lost and as Jane is trying to figure out where they are a girl runs out in front of the car and they crash. They try and find the girl but there’s not a trace of her.
As the film unspools Jane finds out that the mysterious girl is more known to Ben than he is letting on. Shutter is another in a long line of redoing J-Horror (is that still applicable since it comes from Thailand?).
The film poster proudly mentions the Grudge and the Ring. The soundtrack is composed by Nathan Barr and doesn’t seem like a horror film at first. The first track, ‘Welcome to Tokyo,’ sounds quite happy as you’d expect a couple on their honeymoon. Things soon get ominous with ‘We Hit a Girl!’
The tracks alternate between ominous and some that sound like they come from an action-adventure yarn from there out. There’s some good use of quieter music, but the film sounds like it’s riding on the coattails of those two others that the posters makes sure to mention.
