Alvin! To some degree I owe Dave and the munks some apology because in our family friendly outing to the theater my thoughts were “Well, Underdog sucked so Alvin and company will too.”
I have to report that the fam had a great time, yours truly included, with Alvin and the Chipmunks and Jason Lee is a bit redeemed in my eyes thanks to this film (more on that when/if I review the DVD).
Unless you’ve been living under a rock since 1950 you know that those singing Chipmunks have been crooning their Christmas cheer since the 1960s. This film updates them in a modern twist as they’re found by Dave (Jason Lee) and sing a Christmas song that launches them to fame.
The problem with the score is not that it’s bad (it isn’t), but that it only contains the music for the scenes and doesn’t have any chipmunk warbling. If you want to hear the songs from the film then you need to make sure that you get the soundtrack (my review copy has the same cover but says “original score from the motion picture”).
As a score it’s serviceable and is not poorly done, but I was hoping for the jazzed up tunes like the Christmas Song and Witchdoctor. Alas, it was not meant to be for me but if you’re a fan of the film or composer Christopher Lennertz then this will do for you.
If you a fan of the helium voiced Chipmunks (not squirrels!) make sure you check the back of the case before purchase.
