Soundtrack Review: Beowulf

Beowulf is a computer generated animation film from Robert Zemeckis using the same motion capture technology he used in the Polar Express. However, before Zemeckis got this pixels and bytes on it, it was an epic old English poem.

From what I’ve heard if you’re an English major you’re probably going to hate the film, but those who want to turn off their brain and gobble popcorn may well enjoy it (Angelina Jolie as Grendal’s mom with stiletto heels?). But I come here not to judge the movie but to review the soundtrack. If you’re an English major then you may not like the music either, but I found it (having changed my major to general studies) an epic soundtrack to that second description of the film (the popcorn kind). Alan Silvestri starts off the album with a bit of chest thumping and male chanting, but it’s when he slows things down and goes for a quieter sound that it gets better. You also have a song performed by Robin Wright-Penn (soon to drop the Penn according to news reports today) and a closing credits song by Idina Menzel (“A Hero Comes Home”). I liked the quieter moments (such as Penn’s song) more than the chest-thumping, but it still was a good soundtrack.

I did enjoy the Beowulf soundtrack a lot, and it probably would reach my top 20 this year. I'm not a big fan of Silvestri, but I think Beowulf is one of his best scores. I highly recommend it.
