Soundtrack Review: Robert J. Kral – ‘Superman Doomsday’

Superman’s worst day is realized when some Luthor Corporation archeologists uncover an alien tomb and unleash a monster called Doomsday. The name turns out to be prophetic for the Man of Steel. This storyline was told over a series of comics and came to fruition in one of the most read Superman comics – when Superman dies.

The storyline was adapted for the small screen (direct to DVD that is) and was somewhat abbreviated in the adaptation (it didn’t bother me, but some comic fans might be disappointed). Robert J. Kral was given the task of scoring the death of an American icon when he was signed on to write the music for the film. He does do admirably, but is given the chore of scoring such an epic adventure on a small scale. Some of the tracks are very good and sound like a full orchestra is used even though all the music is played by Kral on his computer. However, some of the tracks that should sound that way sounded like a computer-generated orchestra. What’s more the pity is that these tracks are the big ones. The music is really rather good, it just would’ve sounded so much better with a big orchestra of “real” instruments. The CD is recommended if you enjoyed the film.
