Based on the novel of the same name by Charles Baxter, director Robert Benton seeks to explore love in it’s various incarnations. As the opening dialogue (by star Morgan Freeman) says “There’s a story about the Greek Gods, they were bored so they invented human beings.
But they were still bored so they invented love, then they weren’t bored any longer. So they decided to try love for themselves. Finally, they invented laughter so they could stand it.” The film stars Freeman, Selma Blair, and Greg Kinnear and explores all the many facets of the emotion that ended up driving the Gods mad.
The soundtrack also explores various aspects of that sought after emotion and features a cornucopia of different artists, including The New Mastersounds (‘Your Love is Mine’), The Frames (‘Falling Slowly), Darren Smith (‘Ghost’), and Jeff Buckley (‘Hallelujah’). None of the songs seem to sink into the mire of lost love, but I liked all that heard.
The film appears to be an anthology that explores the relationships of many different characters and the soundtrack also explores the same via song and two tracks of dialogue from the film.
