Soundtrack Review: Various Artists – ‘The Ten’

Director David Wain brings this comedy to the silver screen about the Ten Commandments. He takes each of the ten and makes a comic vignette out of them. For example, “Thou shalt worship no God before me” becomes the tale of a guy (Adam Brody) who falls out of a plane without a parachute. Sounds like a bad end right?

Well not exactly since he just becomes lodged in the ground in a position that if he’s removed he’ll immediately die. So he becomes a celebrity from her newfound “position” but has to adjust to living life in a hole. The film stars Winona Ryder (who falls in love with a ventriloquist’s dummy!), Liev Schreiber, Famke Janssen, and Jessica Alba amongst others. The front of the CD says “Summer’s Hottest Soundtrack,” but wasn’t one of those commandments “thou shalt not lie?” It’s not exactly terrible but it has too much of a synthesizer quality to me and I definitely wouldn’t have called it “hot” in any meaning of the word. The song that might appeal is “Written in Stone” which features the cast singing about the deranged situations of the movie. The picture sounds funny in a wacky way, but the soundtrack is only “bears false witness” to the public relations hack that put the sticker on the front and thou shalt not do that.
