Soundtrack Review: John Powell – ‘The Bourne Ultimatum’

Matt Damon is back as Jason Bourne in another film based on Robert Ludlum’s title character. This time the agency that trained him as an assassin is back to try and eliminate the amnesiac Bourne.

Bourne comes into contact with a reporter named Simon Ross (Paddy Considine) who may have the secrets to Bourne’s true identity, but Noah Vosen (David Strathairn), a government official in charge of the sinister agency, is hoping to start another cover organization. Now both Bourne and Ross stand to jeopardize Vosen’s plans so he sends agent Pamela Lundy (Joan Allen) to both find and eliminate them. John Powell was also given an assignment, if he chose to accept it – to score the movie (cyanide capsule optional). He obviously chose to since he wrote the scores for the other two Bournes. The score is a fantastic one and uses both ethnic sounds (“Tangiers”) and orchestra to great effect. There’s also an end credit song by Moby entitled “Extreme Ways (Bourne Ultimatum).” The score is very good and it has a “Bond” feel to it (always good to me, a Bond fan).
