Soundtrack Review: Cheetah Girls 2

In 2003 the Cheetah Girls movie appeared on the Disney Channel. From what I hear, it was pretty formulaic. However, 2006 saw the huge ratings explosion of High School Musical on the Disney Channel.

Hoping to make lightening strike twice, Disney turned Cheetah Girls 2 directorial duties over to High School Musical director Kenny Ortega (Oz Scott directed the first Cheetah Girls). The Cheetah Girls are a fictional girl band consisting of Galleria (Raven-Symone), Chanel (Adrienne Bailon), Dorinda (Sabrina Bryan), and Aquanette (Kiely Williams). In this adventure the girls go to Barcelona, Spain to perform in a music festival. Since they are in Spain, the songs on the soundtrack have a Spanish tinge to them. Tracks include “The Party’s Just Begun” (Cheetah Girls), “Strut” (Cheetah Girls), “Dance with Me” (Drew Seeley, featuring Belinda), “Why Wait” (Belinda), “A La Nanita Nana” (Cheetah Girls and Belinda), “Do Your Own Thing” (Raven-Symone), “It’s Over” (Cheetah Girls), “Step Up” (Cheetah Girls), “Amigas Cheetahs” (Cheetah Girls and Belinda), “Cherish the Moment” (Cheetah Girls), “Cheetah Sisters (Barcelona Mix)” (Cheetah Girls), “Everyone’s a Star” (Raven-Symone), and “It’s Gonna Be Alright” (Raven-Symone). The first ten tracks actually appear in the film and the final three tracks only appear on this CD (in other words don’t be surprised when you don’t hear them in the film). There is also a CD-ROM bonus in the form of a Cheetah Girls 2 Studio Session. This has some minor interviews with the Girls before they launch into a studio bound music video for ‘The Party’s Just Begun.’ Okay, I’ll admit it – I didn’t see the original Cheetah Movie and the reviews I looked at did not make me want to. However, I’ll have to express some interest in CG2 since it promises “from the director of High School Musical” (as the many TV commercials promise). The soundtrack is full of pop music with the occasional Spanish flair. I thought the music was okay, but I really didn’t hear anything that had he replay-ability of the High School Musical soundtrack. It could also be that I have not seen the movie and don’t have the visuals to associate with the music. I guess I’m doing a lot of High School Musical comparison (thank you repeated Disney Channel TV commercials doing the same thing), but I see the Cheetahs as a pretty girl-centric affair where High School Musical had a crossover effect. The CG2 soundtrack also is pretty much pop music where the High School Musical soundtrack was a mixture of different styles. I did enjoy the music on CG2, but I think my kids liked it more (and they’re the target audience). I guess we’ll all find out when the Cheetah Girls 2 premieres on the Disney Channel if lightening truly does strike twice. The Cheetah Girls 2 Soundtrack is now available at Amazon.
