Soundtrack Review: Happy Endings

By Mark Sung Oct 5, 2005, 22:06 GMT

Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal makes her recording debut on the soundtrack to director Don Roo’s movie Happy Endings. Performing songs which include Billy Joel’s ‘Just The Way You Are,’ Maggie Gyllenhaal, who stars as the karaoke-singing seductress in the movie, demonstrates she is a very capable singer.

Whilst her voice may not be to everyone’s taste, there’s no denying she has a singing style of her own and her voice has enough character in it to make her songs memorable.

Maggie Gyllenhaal also performs two other original songs ‘How Lucky Am I?’ and ‘I can’t Wait,’ which are both sung beautifully with emotion.

Southwestern rockers Calexico provide three songs for the soundtrack beginning with their song ‘Glimpse.’ Their other songs include two instrumental tracks with the guitar based ‘Over Your Shoulder’ and the accordion led ‘Old Man Waltz.’

Black Heart Procession also contribute to the soundtrack with their evocative ‘Tropics Of Love,’ whilst electronica artist Greyboy provides the quirky track ‘Smokescreen.’

The Happy Endings soundtrack is a nice collection of songs which are easy to enjoy. The highlights of the album are the first two songs by Black Heart Procession and Calexico, as well as the songs sung by Maggie Gyllenhaal, who turns out to have quite an impressive singing voice. Fans of the film will no doubt enjoy the selection of music which was used to underscore the different stories from the movie.
