Soundtrack Review: Battlestar Galactica Season 3 – O.S.T.

I wasn’t sure what I was expecting since I’m not a regular viewer of the show.  I suppose that I was expecting something a bit more science fiction sounding.  Bear McCreary composes music that I wasn’t expecting and sounds like something that you’d hear from the Chieftains, in Braveheart, Arabic sounding music, or perhaps even the English Patient.

There’s a great use of voice and what would sound like native instruments.  He also uses orchestra and every instrument that is available in one to great effect.   It’s really quite thrilling and if you didn’t show the cover to people I bet they’d think it was from some large Hollywood epic movie.

Not that Battlestar isn’t epic on the small screen mind you; it just wasn’t what I was expecting.  The music has an interesting range from action-oriented types, a rather moving sonata on a piano, and a redo of “All Along the Watchtower.”  All of them seem to play roles in the episodes that they’re from.  What makes this recommended is that even if you’re not a fan of the show you still get some great music.

Fans, of course, will want to snatch it up as well.  Excellent music.  The show is rather good from what I’ve heard (just never caught it – sorry) and this soundtrack only makes it sound more so.
