The dawn of Hip Hop in new drama series The Breaks

The Breaks premieres on VH1 and takes up the story of Hip Hop where the movie left off

The Breaks is a brand new drama series from VH1 that follows three people as they try to make it in the fledgling Hip Hop industry.

The series is based on the 2016 TV movie of the same name that was directed by Seth Mann, and partly based on the book by Dan Charnas.

The film followed three friends who came together through their love of music and Hip Hop. Starting in the early 1990s the New Yorkers are graduate Nikki who gives up law school to try and make it in the music business, her struggling DJ boyfriend David and upcoming producer DeeVee who is looking for the next big thing.

Charnas was a writer for the very first rap magazine, The Source, and wrote the critically acclaimed book The Big Payback: The History Of The Business Of Hip-Hop.

Seth Mann has directed episodes of Homeland, Ballers, Californication and has also directed some of The Breaks series episodes.

Brought together by a love for Hip Hop and a burning ambition to make it in the music industry

The series has the same cast as the movie with Afton Williamson as Nikki, Mack Wilds as DeeVee, Wood Harris as Barry Fouray, David Call as David.

Set in a world where music meets life on the street and poverty meets privilege,The Breaks will pickup the story where the movie left off. Following the young and ambitious as they try to make it in the burgeoning world of Hip Hop.

In this premiere episode Nikki starts her first day working for Hip Hop mogul Barry Fouray and has to sort out a party for rapper Special Ed.
