One little boy's quest to understand why he does not belong to his adoptive mother takes us all on a journey for the real story behind his humble beginnings. The writers artfully blend modern-day action with the classic fairytale stories and characters we all grew up with.
The Snow White tale features Ginnafer Goodwin, tormented by the Evil Queen (Lana Parrilla), who is revived from cursed slumber by the kiss of Prince Charming (Josh Dallas). Not content to let her be, Evil Queen curses Snow White, Prince Charming and all of the characters of the fairytale world to be frozen in time in some horrible place.
Snow White strikes a deal with a wicked Rumpelstiltskin (Robert Carlyle) the imprisoned miller who has bargained for the baby girl named Emma she carries, on her 28th year.
Cut to the modern-day world, where Emma Swan (Jennifer Morrison) is a hard-working bail bondsperson, who was left abandoned on the side of the road as an infant and nurtured in foster care. We learn she gives her son for adoption to a successful professional in hopes the child has a better start in life than she did.
Except, the mother who takes her biological son, Henry, is a doppelganger for one apple and mirror loving alpha female.
Henry's plan leads his real mother Emma to the town of Storybrooke, where time stands still and the people there no longer remember who they once were.
"Once Upon a Time" is poised to present a rich panoply of characters we remember in fanciful stories of long ago, and who can unlock the present day unhappiness of people who do not realize who they truly are.
So far, so good. A smart family show that appeals for all ages.
"Once Upon a Time" premiered Sunday, October 23rd at 8:00 p.m. ET on ABC.
