Review: Dinocroc vs. Supergator is epic summer fun

When you see the late David Carradine open up what is guaranteed to be an awesome B-Movie slice of Saturday night fun, it bodes well for how the film will unfold.

Especially when Carradine's character (Jason Drake) tells his evil right-hand woman Victoria to "call the Cajun."

That scene was prompted by our evil mogul Drake's experiment gone awry, as nature doesn't play nice with meddling humans, and in these sort of films it is always beasts born of human hubris and greed that come back to bite you, or in Syfy's latest "Dinocroc vs, Supergator's" case, swallow you whole.

Roger Corman does schlock like no other filmmaker. We need these fun, popcorn movies to break up the heaviness of day-to-day life.  Do you want to watch "Schindler's List" on a Friday or Saturday night?  No! You want big CGI reptiles that can run like Rottweilers and sound like the audio outtakes of "Jurassic Park." And busty blondes in blue bikinis who rattle off hackneyed lines and are part of the overall bodycount.

"Dinocroc vs. Supergator" begins with a huge bang, and within the first minute I counted four people eaten by Supergator. Dinocroc ups the ante as the film progresses and it looks like he will be the most prodigious killer, until the end of the film when Supergator redeems himself with some awesome human daisy-cutter moments.

Carradine was such a good actor, he made the most of the script and elevated the game, which includes scenes with his go-to "Cajun," the laughably cool and collected Logan (Rib Hillis) whose biceps are bared, his hat jauntily attached to head, and his gator killing arsenal stoked with explosive cross-bow weaponry.

There are scenes that feel like direct lifts from "Jaws," "Jurassic Park" and even "Predator," where a group of six muscled, cocky wayward special forces Marine-types have been helicoptered in, hired as mercenaries by Drake to get in to ground zero to make sure no witnesses live to tell of the botched biological snafu.

One douchey Hollywood bigwig, Chaz Kingsley, calls in to a resort to make sure his suite is in perfect order. The Concierge "Jer" he rings up spins off dialogue that will remind you of Pee Wee Herman playing the Bell Boy in the movie that dramatizes his bike finding odyssey in "Pee Wee's Big Adventure," when James Brolin was figuring out his next move.

The lucky cast and crew got to shoot this epic in Kaua'i, stunningly green and lush, and perfect foliage to hide two superbeasties who are blown up in size thanks to experiments gone haywire in Drake's supersecret compound.

If you appreciated "Dinoshark," "Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus," "Mega Piranha" and "Sharktopus," this film will exceed all your expectations.
