Over the next few weeks I’ll be talking about many of the pilot episodes for some of upcoming season’s highly anticipated shows. First up: “Pushing Daisies.”
ABC’s “Pushing Daisies” is my favorite pilot so far. Lee Pace (“Wonder Falls”, “Soldier’s Girl”) is Ned who discovers as a boy with tragic results that he has the ability to touch dead things and bring them back to life.
Once he reawakens something, the act of just touching them returns them instantly back to their former state.
He must be careful though, if he brings something back and then doesn't touch it again another creature or human in the vicinity will instantly fall down dead.
Lee is adorable as the shy Ned, wary of physical contact. Chi McBride is his partner, a private eye who strong arms Ned into awakening corpses to discover how they died and then collecting any rewards. British actress Anna Friel (whom I adore) is Chuck, Ned's long lost childhood love. Anna is almost unrecognizable; she's lost so much weight....too much in my opinion. Tiny Kristin Chenoweth is Olive and she carries a bit of a torch for Ned.
Barry Sonnenfeld produced this and his fingerprints are all over it. It's whimsical with a biting sense of humor and gorgeous production value. Writer Bryan Fuller (“Wonderfalls”, Dead Like Me”) has made the story part mystery, part comedy, part romance so there’s something for everyone.
