David Tennant Looks Locked for Doctor Who
By James Wray Apr 1, 2005, 18:02 GMT
The BBC has announced they are in talks with David Tennant to replace Christopher Eccleston as the new Doctor Who.
The UK Times newspaper is also reporting a BBC insider as saying the deal is as good as signed, with just a few details to work out with the actors' agent.
The corporation also officially confirmed the commissioning of the second series.
Jane Tranter, Controller, BBC Drama Commissioning, said a new 13-part series of Doctor Who has been commissioned for BBC ONE, together with a 60-minute Christmas special written by Russell T Davies.
They also said that Christopher Eccleston would not be returning as the Doctor.
Eccleston made the announcement independent of the broadcaster earlier in the week, somewhat to their surprise it seems. The corporation is reported to be quite annoyed with the actor since they have already ordered a whole set of collectibles and promotional items featuring his likeness.
It is thought the actor was worried about being typecast as a slightly camp Doctor Who and concerned this would impact on the sort of roles he would be offered in the future.
However, Billie Piper will return as the Doctor's companion. Filming is likely to start early in the summer.
Tennant is currently featured on the BBC's network in the racy drama Casanova.
