It seems Cohen under the guise of Kazakhstani reporter Borat had been invited to sing the American national anthem at the rodeo event.
He started by telling the assembled crowd "I hope you kill every man, woman and child in Iraq, down to the lizards ... And may George W. Bush drink the blood of every man, woman and child in Iraq."
Cohen then launched into a bizarre version of the song. Needless to say the audience were not amused.
The local paper in Roanoke (where the rodeo took place) reported that the audience turned "downright nasty" and that they thought Cohen was lucky nobody shot him!
Borat and his crew had escorted out of the building and were asked not to return.
Rodeo organiser Bobby Rowe told the paper. "They loaded up the van and they screeched out of there."
The show, which is shown on UK Channel Four and HBO, is no stranger to controversy. With Cohen showing a knack of getting access to the most unlikely people. He led a group of country bar patrons on an anti-Semetic song (Cohen is Jewish himself) where they all sang "Thrown the Jew down the well."
