TV Picks: Justified Season 5, Boyd and Raylan don't disappoint

Do you like your point blank shotgun murders with a side of witty one-liners?

Perhaps a little Appalachian mafia payback with layers of toothless kinfolk from all points returning to cause a ripple in the Moonshine?

Justified Season 5 is chockfull of moments that will make your jaw drop as the series continues with the forever nonplussed Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) lawman of the tight jeans order, doling out country wisdom while using his sidepiece to regulate. It’s that time to head back to Harlan tonight when Justified Season 5 premieres on FX.

Now, I do not like seeing one of my favorite characters, Ava (Joelle Carter), relegated to an "Orange is the New Black" role and I hope she get's the heck out of prison soon, as the female characters are far and few between, and she's a always a great Bonnie to Boyd's Clyde. It seems like Loretta is the wild card but she is nowhere as interesting as Ava is.

The first two episodes of Season 5 are full of surprises; let’s talk about a new face: Darryl Crowe Jr. (Michael Rapaport) is the new Big Bad, and kin to Dewey Crowe (Damon Herriman).

These scary white boys are Florida swamp cousins. What you see in the new season is bad going to bad and how fluid white trash kin are in finding opportunities that suit them and their "needs." Talk about scary visits from long lost relatives. Rapaport is a deft player and edges his performance with the right amount of menace. Where Dewey is cartoonish, Darryl means business.

Raylan has to go to Florida in the premiere to find (and end) the Crowes’ latest moneymaker. In this action Darryl gets wind of dim Dewey's good fortune.

But the real reason to tune in always is for the exceptional work of Walton Goggins as Boyd Crowder, a rare gift and a villain head and shoulders above the fray on TV. Watch for his scenes with the "Mr. Carson" of the series, Wynn Duffy (Jere Burns, and his eyebrows) to deal with the fallout of last season in the Detroit Mob.

Boyd's stare unnerves, his words slice the brains of his opponents and his reactions are swift and accurate. He's a country boy who can handle any city thug and then some. Goggins should have his own show.

Justified Season 5 premieres Tuesday night, January 7th, on FX at 10pm.
