Deadline reports exclusively that Bette Midler is slated to play Mae West for HBO.

HBO Films has put in development Mae West, a movie about the true Hollywood original, with Bette Midler attached to star and executive produce.

William Friedkin will direct and executive produce. Harvey Fierstein is writing the script. Also executive producing is Jerry Weintraub, who executive produced HBO Films’ Emmy-winning Behind The Candelabra.

Mae West will be based on West’s autobiography Goodness Had Nothing To Do With It.

West once said, "Marriage is a great institution. I'm not ready for an institution yet."

Mae was secretly married at age 17, but it only lasted a few weeks. They didn't legally divorce until 31 years later.

The actress preferred dating younger men. Her long-term partner Paul Novak was 30 years her junior.

Some famous quotes:

“Women like a man with a past, but they prefer a man with a present."

“I'm no model lady. A model's just an imitation of the real thing.”

“I'm a woman of very few words, but lots of action.”
