Animal Planet February 2013 Highlights

Animal Planet has an exceptional series coming your way in 2013 -Rhino Wars (wt) -where four American special forces join the good fight to save endangered rhinos in protected lands that are poached with brazen impunity.

These guys go deep in the bush to prowl the perimeters, catching the poor locals who are gunned up and ready to kill, tempted by great sums of money from misinformed Asians who use rhino horn as a medicine.

In traditional Chinese medicine, the horn is shaved or ground into a powder and dissolved in boiling water  and used to treat fever, rheumatism, gout, and other disorders. It is not prescribed as an aphrodisiac, despite popular belief.

In Yemen, the horn is coveted by Muslim men (despite the fact imports of it were banned in 1982). The material, whose luster improves as it ages, is used for the handles of curved daggers called “jambiya,” which Yemeni boys are gifted with at age 12. Jambiya are considered a sign of manhood and devotion to the Muslim religion.  Yemeni men place great value on the dagger handles, which are commonly studded with jewels.

Our American heroes help South African special forces to guard and preserve the few that are left. The footage they take of orphaned and slaughtered rhinos will lay you low. One person to watch for in "Rhino Wars" is a woman named Petra who rescues these orphaned rhinos and introduces our cast special ops to these affectionate "babies" who bond quickly with humans.

Animal Planet's hit series FINDING BIGFOOT returns with all-new episodes, investigating compelling evidence that may prove the existence of the elusive creature. This season, investigations take the team farther across the globe and deeper into sasquatch history than ever before. For the first time, the intrepid cast of investigators -- Bigfoot Field Research Organization (BFRO) president Matt Moneymaker, researchers James “Bobo” Fay and Cliff Barackman and skeptical scientist Ranae Holland – expands its search in North America and beyond to investigate the sasquatch phenomenon known as “yowies” in Australia and the “orang-pendek” of Indonesia.
