Al Gore will lead Current TV’s analysis of first presidential debate

Major news from Current TV as former VP Al Gore will lead the post-mortem of the first presidential debate on the network.

Current TV today announced that Al Gore will lead the network’s coverage and analysis of the Presidential Debate on October 3rd. 

The debate coverage will be preceded by an evening airing of “Talking Liberally with Stephanie Miller.”

As he did for Current’s convention coverage earlier this month, Mr. Gore will lead a roundtable at Current’s New York studios and will be joined by other Current anchors including former Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm, former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer, new media expert Cenk Uygur and comedian and commentator John Fugelsang.

Current’s debate coverage will feature live analysis, instant alerts regarding campaign spin and fact checking through the same innovative use of social media that the network unveiled during its convention coverage earlier this election season.

The first of three presidential debates will take place at the University of Colorado in Denver on Wednesday, October 3rd with President Barack Obama and Governor Mitt Romney debating domestic policy.

Current’s debate coverage will begin at 8PM et and will be preceded by a special primetime edition of “Talking Liberally with Stephanie Miller” at 7PM et. 

On screen analysis will pause for the 90 minutes of the debate at 9PM et, and will resume after the debate is over at 10:30 PM et.

Current’s debate coverage will feature live Twitter streams that will run along Current’s broadcast screen with a robust online component on Current.com. 

The streams will be comprised of swirls of conversation across a number of topics, including streams from each swing state, streams specific to each topic and sub-topic discussed during the debate, streams specific to each candidate and their policies, and others.

These streams will have titles like “Team Obama,” “Team Romney,” “Mainstream Media,” “Comedians and Celebrities” “States with High Unemployment” and “Healthcare,” among others. Viewers will be able to join the conversations by tweeting #Current2012 and may be able to see their tweets run on-air.
