CNN's 9 PM anchor Piers Morgan Tonight was creamed by Fox News’ overnight program Red Eye, which airs at 3 AM.

The talk show hosted by Greg Gutfeld averaged the largest audience in its five-year history (446,000) as well as 177,000 in adults 25-54.

The reason for Red Eye‘s ratings may lie in some controversy.  One explanation is that Gutfeld’s additional exposure as one of the co-hosts of Fox News’ 5 PM show The Five as well as the Twitter war with Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine over the rocker’s request that Fox News stops playing their music may have spurred some interest in the show.

Another reason was the false Twitter account story where an unscrupulous blogger tried to frame Gutfeld over an imposter Twitter account's homophobic slur without a single fact-check.  Raw Story, without bothering to verify anything, automatically wrote a story titled “Fox Host Greg Gutfeld Tweets Out Homophobic Slur” which they had to retract later on in the day.  You can still see the headline in the URL: http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2011/10/30/fox-host-greg-gutfeld-tweets-out-homophobic-slur/

Regardless of why, the late night FOX News program, Red Eye, achieved its highest rated month ever in total viewers (446,000) in nearly five years (show launched in February 2007).

The raucous 3AM program averaged 177,000 in 25-54 in the middle of the night, this month beats CNN’s Piers Morgan (176,000) at 9PM, CNN’s Erin Burnett Outfront (146,000) at 7PM, MSNBC’s Morning Joe (141,000) from 6-9AM, MSNBC’s Hardball with Chris Matthews (163,000) at 5PM and 7PM, HLN’s Nancy Grace (157,000) at 8PM, and CNN’s John King USA (121,000) at 6PM.
